SA Women Silently Suffering from Uterine Fibroids
Women who are suffering from uterine fibroids may experience heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, back and leg pains and a strange urge to eat clay. Thousands of SA women are silently suffering the devastating symptoms of untreated uterine fibroids. These are muscular, non-cancerous tumours that develop in the walls of the uterus.
New uterine fibroid treatment now available
Fibroids are benign growths that develop on the wall of the uterus causing heavy bleeding and intense period pain and, in some cases, infertility in women.
“Uterine fibroid embolisation, or UFE, is a relatively new treatment in South Africa but it is very well established overseas with more than 30 000 UFEs being performed a year in the United States alone,” said Dr Gary Sudwarts, an interventional radiologist working at the hospital.
